We have already have sent a number of unmanned missions to Mars! Right now there is a NASA rover exploring Mars surface, trying to find life or at least traces that there was life in the past. He is called Curiosity. From this link you can even follow daily updates from Mars, pictures, etc…! http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/#.U6QLml7co40
In the very near future, there are a number of private companies that are planning to send manned missions to Mars. The first one in Mars One, who is planning to launch the first manned mission in 2024. That mission will be a one-way mission, which means people will establish there are become self-sufficient: they won’t come back to Earth. You can check it out on their website: http://www.mars-one.com
Hi 12allep! We have already sent lots of unmanned probes and robot landers to Mars, since the 1970’s! However, for a manned mission I think this is still at least 25 years away! It is a difficult problem to solve, but people (NASA, SpaceX) are working on it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. 🙂
