I would say both. I have many collaborators, in a lot of countries! We usually come up with projects to do together, we discuss ideas, what are interesting questions to ask, results, how to solve problems when we get blocked, what’s the next step to take, etc.. I also discuss a lot with other scientists in my department, the ones I don’t directly work with. I often ask their opinion, what they think about some idea or problems, things like that.

But then, the core of the work, like the calculations, the numerical work, etc… has often to be done alone. So most of the time I work alone, but the most important parts of the work are done in team!
